Happy Ending of the Day

Remember the tear-jerking tale of the Russian ginger seal pup who was rejected by its family and community for being different?

Good news: it has a new home. Joy to the world!

Originally named Nathan, the pup was rescued and moved to the country's leading aquarium. There, they discovered he was a she and renamed her Nafanya, after a lookalike Soviet-era cartoon character. Now, little Nafanya is reportedly thriving, has a great appetite and enjoys playing with her toys, especially a small, blue ball.

Best news of all: she has a webcam! You can check out Nafanya in all her blue-eyed, ginger-furred glory daily between 2 and 8 a.m. EST.

I don't know about you, but I'm a little misty-eyed with happiness. Somebody get me a tissue!

I'd like to make it clear that while I'm not a fan of keeping wild animals captive, there are certainly exceptions. This seal was a guaranteed goner if she was left to fend for herself. Poor little lady. I'm glad she was rescued.

Please Knit Some Sweaters for These Penguins!

Lots of penguins in New Zealand desperately need tiny little sweaters. Their lives depend on it. Do you knit? Will you help?

(Etsy) - A recent oil spill on New Zealand’s coast has left the environment and wildlife in shambles — including the local blue penguin population. While volunteers are working hard to rescue and clean the animals in the region, they require a little bit of crafty help: tiny sweaters, or penguin pajamas, for the rescued birds. These woolen sweaters keep oil-soaked birds warm until they’re well enough to be cleaned and prevent them from ingesting oil from their feathers.

If you’re interested in donating a penguin sweater, New Zealand yarn store Skeinz has provided a handy how-to and is organizing the donation efforts.

Penguin Jumper in 8ply – Must be 100% Wool Yarn 1 pair 3.25mm , 1 pair of 3.75mm needles , 1 set of 3.25mm dpn’s or circular Cast on 36 stitches using 3.25 needles.K1, P1 to end of row. Repeat this row 7 times. Change to 3.75mm needles and K2, P2 rib. Work 4 rows increasing at each end of every row. (44 sts) Continue until work measures 15 cms. Decrease 1 st at each end of every row until 28 sts remain. Decrease 1 st. in middle of next row (27 sts.) Leave on needle. Make second side the same. Transfer the 54 sts from both pieces to 3 of the set of 4 3.25mm needles.(18 sts on each.) and work a round neck in K1 P1 rib for 10 rows. Cast off. Stitch up sides to decreasing to 27sts (opening for flipper). Add elastic to the top and bottom to prevent the penguins getting out of them. Top: 15cm of elastic; bottom 17 cm (knots allowed). Flat elastic okay.

Random Dude Wants to Buy You a Starbucks Coffee

Here's some good news, dahling... App developer Jonathan Stark wants to buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. What's the catch? Nothin'.

He's posted the barcode to his Starbucks coffee card online so that anyone can get free coffee using his account. There's a Twitter account for the card, and it tweets when the card is used or when the balance is depleted (which happens frequently). Some generous folks are contributing to the fund. Awwww... tender moments! People aren't so bad!

How to get your free coffee:

1. Save this picture on your Smartphone

2. Go to Starbucks

3. Order a coffee

4. Check the card’s balance via Twitter to ensure there's money on it

5. If funds are available, hold the pic of Stark's card in front of the barcode scanner.

6. Enjoy your coffee.

Here's a close-up of Stark's card.

Rescue Rules!

Little Mary Poppins, Pomchi extraordinaire, went for her first rock-climbing excursion a few days ago. Girl is a pro! She scrambled up those rocks like nobody's business. Go, Mary!

She would have never rock-climbed if it wasn't for animal rescue.

Found running as an injured stray in a rural area, Mary's time was up at the pound. Nobody wanted to adopt her because of her injuries. It was euthanasia time for our little red pal. Fortunately, a rescue group, Quixote Humane, sprung her from the pound in the nick of time, got her the vet care she needed (resulting in a $1,000 bill, with discount!), nursed her back to health and eventually allowed me to adopt her. As I type these words, she is snoozing in my lap.

The über-caring, passionate volunteers who work so hard to save pets' lives deserve our sincere gratitude. They spend their days cleaning up the messes of irresponsible dog and cat owners, and trying to prevent new messes from happening. They make the world a better place for dogs and cats.

Please attend Bon Fete Fashion for Paws, a silent auction and fashion show benefiting Animal Humane Association of New Mexico.

It all happens TOMORROW evening: Thursday, May 26 at 6 p.m. at Hotel Parq Central

Time is running out! Get your passes now!

Click here for Bon Fete tickets.

Approximately 4 million pet dogs and cats are euthanized each year due to overpopulation. Adopt a dog or cat from a humane society, animal shelter or rescue group and save a life!

Weekend Wrap-Up

AIDS Walk was great. Big thanks to Kevyn for getting everyone together. Viva Team Bossy!

Was so busy Saturday that I couldn't squeeze in time to deliver this special 78th birthday shout-out to the red-headed stranger. Better late than never. Happy belated, Willie.

Last, but not least, look who's in town from NYC for a wedding...

That's right, kids: It's hair guru, good pal and all-around cool guy, Ian.
