The Devil Wears Ice Skates

frozen hell

I'm on Facebook.

You may gasp now.

Please like me

God, I feel so vulnerable.

Don't worry, you won't have to look at gobs of baby pics---it's my business page. But please like it anyway.

I feel so vulnerable again

This "like me" stuff is challenging.

They're Heeeere!

The twins arrived at 37 weeks on August 7 via c-section. They're perfect sweeties. We're head-over-heels in love! Séamus "Shea" Daniel Brown arrived at 8:25 a.m. Stats: 6 lbs, 4.5 oz, 19". Dark Irish, just like Dad.

Pearl Mae Brown arrived at 8:26 a.m. Stats: 5 lbs, 9 oz., 18.5". This little blondie looks suspiciously like Mom.

Everything went incredibly well. The babes are so healthy that they didn't have to spend a second in the NICU (quite common for twins). Now, we're home and happy. Life is incredibly good.

Welcome, Brownies. It's going to be a wonderful ride.

The Brownies are Named

Baby A and Baby B have names. Baby A, left, is Séamus Daniel Brown. On the right, it's Baby B, now known as Pearl Mae Brown

We're finding that people either absolutely love or loathe the names. They're not for everyone, but for our family, they couldn't be more perfect.

Shea and Pearl are doing well, keeping up with good growth stats and kicking, punching and rolling around like crazy. Very active babies. A couple days ago, their movements became visible from the outside. Alien times.

Here they are, having a meeting of the minds. Hopefully, they're conspiring to be very good sleepers. Oh, hope of hopes!

Jackpot!

Mr. Brown and I are immensely pleased to announce that we are expecting a boy and a girl! Somebody please cartwheel; I'm too bulky to do it myself. Yahoooo!

I'm Pregnant!

I realize you might have viewed that first Ft. Myers post last week with some suspicion, as the pics revealed that I'm a little chunkerella.

Fear not, fabulista. Your girl hasn't let herself go----she has two buns in the oven. Yes, two. I'm pregnant with TWINS, dahling!

Needless to say, Mr. Brown and I are over the moon. Let the nesting begin!

So, without further ado, meet the Brownies. Up top is Baby B. Its sibling, Baby A, is reclining below. An August debut is expected.

The New Queen!

This totally works. I'm excited.

Adam Lambert has been chosen as the great Freddie Mercury's replacement in one of the greatest rock bands ever, Queen

He can sing like a mofo, and he's an über-proud, flashy-as all-get-out gay man. This. Is. PERFECT.

Hearty congrats, Adam. Do us all proud.

Perhaps this means there will be a tour soon. Yeeeee!

**UPDATE** 2/4/12: Sounds like this story is a fluke, thanks to a gossip rag, The Daily Star, taking a Lambert quote out of context.

A rep for Queen's record label told Rolling Stone that Adam may perform with Queen at Sonisphere. And even that hasn't been confirmed.

Booooo! You suck, Daily Star! Getting our hopes up over nothing. Shame on you!

I DID IT!

Today marks the one-year anniversary of Absolutely Fabulisa! Hooray!

One year ago, I established a goal: blog every day for one year. I think I might've missed a day or two along the way, but I feel I more than made up for it with multiple posts on most days.

As of this moment, the blog has received 51,228 views over its one-year existence. Not too shabby.

That's the good news. This next part might irk you a bit, though.

I'm done blogging every day. Life has gotten much busier, and keeping up with daily blogging has grown quite challenging.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still post new content regularly, but not quite as often as you're used to. I'm certain you understand.

Thanks for your continued support. Look forward to another year of fabulousness!

xo!

Stop SOPA and PIPA!

No Wiki, no Craigslist, no Reddit, no WordPress and more. It's blackout day, dahling.

Many websites are offline today because the U.S. Senate is considering legislation that would certainly kill the internet as we know it. The legislation is called the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), and would put sites (including Absolutely Fabulisa) in legal jeopardy if we linked to a site anywhere online that had any links to copyright infringement.

This would unmake the Web, just as proposed in the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). We don't want that world. If you don't want it either, visit AmericanCensorship.org for instructions on contacting your Senator. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has more information on this and other issues central to your freedom online.

You can help by educating yourself, signing this petition and contacting your local representative. We can't let this happen. Censorship is wrong. Please, don't just sit there and do nothing---take action now.

She's Out!

In an effort to help children being bullied, actor Kristy McNichol, 49, has come out of the closet. Yay, Kristy!

Victory

I am tooting my own culinary horn.

Not because I think I'm so fabulous, but, rather, in an effort to shock the living daylights out of those who know me best, because they know I'm not the best cook. Yeah, that's putting it mildly.

I totally earned my Swedish meatballs badge tonight. They were, honestly, perfect. Ask Mr. Brown. I used this recipe, but made some tweaks; namely, upping the spices and using beef stock rather than water.

Now I feel as if I can conquer the food world. Bring me some egg whites! I will make a soufflé my bitch.

I retract that last claim. We all know it'll be a miracle if I don't screw up tomorrow morning's oatmeal.

Please Help the Nob Hill Retail Community!

Buy Local & Save!

Community Bands Together to Create Nob Hill Park & Shop

Thursday, December 15th

Many businesses are open late and having 1 Day Sales.

Nob Hill Retailers need your help!

The 17th annual Nob Hill Shop and Stroll happened on December 2nd as planned, but hurricane-strength winds and brutal cold kept most shoppers at home.  It was bad for business, and it couldn’t have come at a worse time for Nob Hill.

Your Nob Hill neighborhood is struggling.  Shop and Stroll is usually one of the biggest sales days of the year for most area retailers.  For many merchants, 2011 has been the most challenging year they’ve ever faced.

Jay Steinberg, owner of Birdland shares, “for the first time in 17 years I’m on the verge of going out of business.”

He is far from alone.  Many stores have closed over the last few years in Nob Hill. Matie Fricker, Co Owner of Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center, and lead organizer of Park and Shop explains, “We’re about to celebrate our store’s 5th anniversary, and it should be a time for celebration.  But it’s never been harder just to stay open. When I started talking to neighbors, I realized that we are not alone.”

Martha Somerville, the owner of Papers for 15 years has seen the neighborhood change. “I grew up going to mom and pop stores--I always loved the creativity and individuality I found there. It feels very different shopping in a store that is locally owned. You can feel the passion of the owner, their heart is in the business and you really feel the love in how you are treated.”  Unfortunately, Martha has been forced to move Papers into a smaller space in order to save her shop.  “The sales just aren’t coming into support the cost of doing business.” Martha fears that without a change Nob Hill could end up looking like a ghost town.

What's happening in Nob Hill is happening all over America, and through Park & Shop, the merchants of Nob Hill hope to make it easier for folks to keep their money in their local community.  According to Wayne Story, VP of  Communications & Marketing for the Albuquerque Independent Business Association (AIBA) “Albuquerque area consumers and businesses are spending too much of their money on businesses with ownership in other states, and the money is flooding out of New Mexico. It's filling the pockets of out of state internet businesses and national companies whose profits leave the state and never return.”

Whether or not you can shop on Thursday, December 15th, Nob Hill merchants hope that you will choose to support locally and independently owned small businesses. By choosing to support Nob Hill and other locally owned businesses you can effectively keep vitally needed resources here in New Mexico.

Happy Ending of the Day

Remember the tear-jerking tale of the Russian ginger seal pup who was rejected by its family and community for being different?

Good news: it has a new home. Joy to the world!

Originally named Nathan, the pup was rescued and moved to the country's leading aquarium. There, they discovered he was a she and renamed her Nafanya, after a lookalike Soviet-era cartoon character. Now, little Nafanya is reportedly thriving, has a great appetite and enjoys playing with her toys, especially a small, blue ball.

Best news of all: she has a webcam! You can check out Nafanya in all her blue-eyed, ginger-furred glory daily between 2 and 8 a.m. EST.

I don't know about you, but I'm a little misty-eyed with happiness. Somebody get me a tissue!

I'd like to make it clear that while I'm not a fan of keeping wild animals captive, there are certainly exceptions. This seal was a guaranteed goner if she was left to fend for herself. Poor little lady. I'm glad she was rescued.

Mea Culpa!

Three weeks later...

I totally forgot to let you know that, YES, I was able to remove the Bali green from my hair.

It was a two-part process:

1. Vinegar and lemon juice.

2. You'll have to wait for part two.

That's right, friends: it's more wait-time for the ridiculously drawn-out saga of the green hair fiasco.

Part two will be fun. You'll see. I'll try not to take three more weeks with this one.
